About us

We're Jim and Jean Morgan and our farm, J4 Alpacas, is located in the heart of McHenry County's Bull Valley near scenic Woodstock, Illinois. We both grew up in rural settings, but it took some time to return to the lifestyle we love. We have raised Suri alpacas since we entered the alpaca business in 1996. This is how we came to be alpaca breeders...

We had the desire to own livestock for many years, but with Jim's career it was not feasible. After 32 years with the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (which entailed 10 transfers), Jim retired as Special Agent in charge of the five-state district headquartered in Chicago. In 1995 we saw an ad in a local magazine describing alpacas as easy to raise and being the "huggable investment". Thus began the "research phase" of J4 Alpacas.

We visited many farms from Maryland to Wisconsin, and Iowa to Arizona. The farm visits showed us 3 things: how easy the alpaca is to care for; how many fine people are raising alpacas; and that a wonderful lifestyle could be achieved. We were hooked!!! With the purchase of our first alpaca in 1996, Jim was finally able to use his Animal Science degree! We purchased more animals and J4 Alpacas became a reality. J4 is named for us (Jim and Jean), our daughter, Jamie, and our son, Jeff.

Jim is the past President of the Great Lakes Alpacas Association and we are also members of the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association, the Alpaca Fiber Cooperative of North America, AOBA Show Division, Illinois Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association, The Suri Network, the Alpaca Registry and Alpaca United.

Many people would like to own alpacas, but do not have the facilities or time for daily livestock care. We provide boarding services with the assurance that your alpacas will receive the same high quality care that we provide our own. Whether you want to start your herd now, or if you're interested only in the investment aspect of owning alpacas and never intend to own a farm, we can help. Alpacas are an exceptional investment and provide excellent tax benefits to owners. Many of the tax benefits apply even if you choose a "buy and board" style of ownership.
